Is Nikko worth a day trip from Tokyo?
Ten hours, four of them travelling, for one shrine and a lake. Put like that it sounds thin, and about one visitor in ten comes back and says so. Here is the case for going, the case against, and the two kinds of traveller who should skip it entirely.

The case for
What makes Nikko worth the day
The exception to Japanese restraint, plus a mountain road, two hours from Tokyo.
Three things, and the first is the one people underestimate.
Toshogu is not like the rest of Japan. A traveller who has spent a week among plain cedar, raked gravel and deliberate emptiness arrives at a building carrying five hundred and eight carvings and enough gold leaf to be visible from the trees, and the contrast does something that a photograph cannot. It is the single most useful counterexample to everything else you will see.
The mountains are a different country. Forty minutes above the shrine the road climbs through forty-eight hairpins to a lake at one thousand two hundred and sixty-nine metres with a ninety-seven-metre waterfall falling out of it. Most people book the day for the shrine and remember the road.
It is genuinely close. Two hours from central Tokyo on a direct train. Almost nothing else of this quality is that near.
The case against
Five honest reasons to skip Nikko
All five turn up in the one-star reviews, and all five are predictable in advance.
- It is a long day for one site
Four hours of travelling for six hours in Nikko. If ten-hour coach days are something you already know you dislike, this one will not convert you.
- Tokyo has more than three days of Tokyo in it
If this is a short trip and you have not yet done Asakusa, Shibuya, the museums and a proper day of walking, Nikko is the wrong use of a day.
- Several tours skip the mountains
And the mountains are half the point. A tour that does Toshogu and turns round is a shorter and thinner day than the one people describe.
- In winter the lake may be off
The mountain road can close and the itinerary quietly shrinks. Check before booking a December day around the waterfall.
- The peak fortnight is genuinely busy
Late October and early November are the best weeks and the most crowded ones, and the road traffic is real.

Is Nikko worth visiting from Tokyo?
Yes, if you have four or more days in Tokyo. Toshogu is architecturally unlike anything else in Japan and the mountains above it are a completely different landscape. On a three-day trip, see Tokyo first.
Is Nikko better than Kamakura or Hakone?
Different. Kamakura is closer and easier, Hakone is about views of Fuji and hot springs, and Nikko is about one extraordinary building and a mountain road. If you only have one day trip, the choice is really between a temple town, a volcano and a mausoleum.
How many hours do you actually get in Nikko?
About six, out of a ten- to eleven-hour day. Two of those are at Toshogu and ninety minutes at the lake, if the lake is included.
Should you stay a night in Nikko?
It is much better and almost nobody does. A night turns a rushed day into an unhurried two and puts the hot springs within reach.
What do people complain about most?
The length of the day, and tours that did not go to the lake. The first is unavoidable; the second is entirely avoidable by reading the itinerary before booking.
