Coach days buy the sights. Private days buy the clock.

Trains from Tokyo cost roughly twenty-five dollars return, plus shrine entry and local buses. It is a long day and it is entirely doable.
- Use a Japan Rail Pass if you have one
The JR route via Utsunomiya is covered. The Tobu line, which is the faster one, is not.
- Skip the lake if the shrine is the point
The tours that stay in the valley are shorter and cheaper, and for a lot of visitors Toshogu alone justifies the day.
- Divide the private prices by your party
Several are per vehicle. For four people the per-head figure lands in coach territory, and the day is considerably better.
