Nikko onsen: what a day trip can actually fit in

Nikko was a hot-spring region long before it was a coach destination, and there are two entirely separate onsen areas near it — one thirty minutes downstream, one an hour beyond the lake. Neither fits comfortably into a day that also includes the shrine, which is why only one tour on this page attempts it.

A hot-spring town in the mountains near Nikko in autumn

Quick answer

The two main onsen areas near Nikko are Kinugawa, about thirty minutes from the town, and Yumoto, beyond Lake Chuzenji at the far end of the valley. Both are traditionally overnight destinations rather than day-trip stops. One tour on this page combines the World Heritage sites with a hot spring, at $71; everything else treats Nikko as a sightseeing day.

The two areas

Kinugawa or Yumoto: which onsen near Nikko?

Kinugawa is easy and Yumoto is better. Both really want a night.

They are in opposite directions and they suit different trips.

Kinugawa Onsen sits about thirty minutes from Nikko on the Tobu line, in a river gorge lined with large hotels. It is the accessible one: easy to reach, plenty of day-use bathing, and it works as an add-on to a Nikko day if you are staying the night rather than returning to Tokyo.

Yumoto Onsen is at the far end of the valley, an hour beyond Lake Chuzenji, past the lake and a second waterfall. The water is sulphurous and cloudy, the village is small, and almost no day tour reaches it. It is the better onsen and the harder one to fit in.

The honest position is that both are overnight propositions. Nikko rewards a night far more than most Tokyo day trips do, and the hot springs are the reason: a shrine in the morning, the lake in the afternoon and a bath in the evening is a genuinely good twenty-four hours, and about ninety per cent of visitors do the first two and go home.

If you only have a day

Five ways to fit hot water into a Nikko day trip

None of them are perfect, and one of them is to stop trying.

  • Book the tour that includes one

At $71 it is the only listing here that ends in a bath. One review so far, so read it as an itinerary rather than a rating.

  • Use a footbath instead

There are free or nearly free ashiyu footbaths in the Nikko area, which is not the same thing and is a genuinely pleasant twenty minutes after four hours of walking.

  • Do Kinugawa on the way back

It is on the Tobu line between Nikko and Tokyo. If you are travelling independently, an hour there costs you an hour and works.

  • Skip the lake and bathe instead

A defensible trade for a second visit: Toshogu in the morning, Kinugawa in the afternoon, back to Tokyo in the evening.

  • Or stay the night

Which is the real answer. A ryokan in Nikko or Kinugawa turns a rushed ten-hour day into an unhurried two, and the price is often less than people expect.

If the hot springs are why you are going, the day trip is the wrong shape and a night is the right one.

Common questions

Nikko hot springs, answered

Are there hot springs in Nikko?

Yes, two main areas. Kinugawa Onsen is about thirty minutes from the town on the Tobu line, and Yumoto Onsen is at the far end of the valley beyond Lake Chuzenji.

Can you visit an onsen on a Nikko day trip?

Just about, and only instead of something else. One tour on this page combines the World Heritage sites with a hot spring at $71. Otherwise a bath means giving up the lake or staying the night.

Which is the best onsen near Nikko?

Yumoto, for the sulphurous water and the quiet, though it is an hour beyond the lake and almost no day tour reaches it. Kinugawa is far easier and perfectly good.

Do onsen near Nikko allow tattoos?

It varies by establishment and it is worth checking in advance. Some refuse entry, some allow covering, and private baths are widely available as an alternative.

Is it better to stay a night in Nikko?

For the hot springs, definitely. A shrine in the morning, the lake in the afternoon and a bath in the evening is the trip Nikko is actually shaped for, and very few visitors give it the night.
